* Setting up Double Stockinette Stitch 1:08
* 4-Step Bind Off for 1x1 Rib 4:20
* 2x2 Rib 15:58
* Italian Tubular Bind Off in the Round 22:00
In this video I''ll show you how to knit the Italian tubular bind off for 1x1 rib, 2x2 rib and in the round.
The Italian tubular bind off creates an invisible edge where one side of the knitting merges seamlessly into the other side. This bind off is not knitted on two knitting needles. Instead the stitches are sewn together with a tapestry needle.
The Italian tubular bind off begins with two rows of double stockinette stitch. This gives the bind off more stability. It also creates a small “tube” which is why the bind-off is called a “tubular” bind off.
Then the bind off is sewn using a four-step technique that’s repeated until all the stitches have been bound off. This four-step technique is used whether you’re binding off 1x1 rib, 2x2 rib or rib in the round. It’s incredibly versatile!
Start by working two rows (or rounds) of double stockinette stitch. For 2x2 rib, the stitches will first need to be reconfigured into a 1x1 formation (see the video above at this timestamp: 15:58)
Then work the two set-up stitches:
1. Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch (a knit stitch) as if to purl. Pull the yarn through
2. Insert the tapestry needle into the second stitch (a purl stitch) from the back of the knitting as if to knit. Pull the yarn through.
Now work the four-step sewing technique until all the stitches have been worked:
1. Knit Off (knit stitch)
Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch (a knit stitch) as if to knit. Then pull the whole stitch off the knitting needle. Pull the yarn through and ensure it’s snug but not tight.
2. Purl On (knit stitch)
Skipping the first purl stitch, insert the tapestry needle into the next knit stitch as if to purl. Pull the yarn through.
3. Purl Off (purl stitch)
Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch (a purl stitch) as if to purl. Then pull the whole stitch off the knitting needle. Pull the yarn through and ensure it’s snug but not tight.
4. Knit On (purl stitch)
Skipping the first knit stitch, insert the tapestry needle into the next purl stitch from the back of the knitting as if to knit. Pull the yarn through.

    What I don’t understand is that when she turns her needle around to start the second row, she has the same stitch that she started with. But every time I start with one, I turn it around and it looks like the opposite stitch. So what do I do then?

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch День тому

      I cast on an even number of stitches, so my last stitch is a purl stitch. When I turn my needle around it is a knit stitch (because the back of a purl is a knit and vice versa). I’ll guess that you have an odd number of stitches. This is ok! Just follow the instructions and knit the knits and purl the purls after knitting your first row. If you start with a purl stitch, that’s ok. Just purl it. If you start with a knit stitch, then knit it. I hope that makes sense!

    Like some of the others, I ended up with more stitches than I needed. Finally sussed out that you need to follow the (K2tog) 3 times, ( yo, k1) 6 times and (K2tog) 3 times as 1 pattern, so the next bit starts (K2tog) 3 times etc So you have 2 blocks of ((K2tog) 3 times together. I was missing out the first bit each time . Does this make sense?

    Some great tips, but food coloring won't actually dye your wool. It will just stain it, and that stain will gradually lighten or disappear as your yarn / garment is exposed to the sun and washed. If you really want to dye wool (or cotton/linen/silk), even with natural materials, it is most likely more expensive than buying commercially dyed yarn. But it is a lot of fun and a great creative process in itself!

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch День тому

      This is a good point! Food colouring isn’t very color fast, but for very casual dyers who don’t want to spend a lot of money on new pots and pans, it’s an easy way to get started. Natural dyes sounds like a lot of fun too!

    Hey Davina! I’ve been watching all your tutorials and I absolutely love them- it’s really given me momentum to get into knitting. I purchased ‘super chunky’ yarn today along with bamboo needles to try out this pattern. However, my yarn looks so much thicker/heavier than yours in the video, which means I’m struggling to fit the full 49 stitches onto the needle. Would I be right in guessing there’s a difference between the U.K. and U.S. when it comes to yarn?

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch День тому

      Hi! This is really a matter of knitting gauge, which I go into detail in this video : ua-cam.com/video/M-lvbzhq3fo/v-deo.htmlsi=Fnd7xPpdhRTPlFKg the gauge for this pattern is 11 sts = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch. If you can get this knitting tension with your chosen yarn and needles then you’ve met the pattern gauge and your hat will turn out to be the same measurements as the pattern’s. If you have fewer than 11 stitches in 10cm, then you can consider dropping down a needle size or switching out a thinner yarn. It’s a bit of troubleshooting when it comes to gauge 😅 I hope that helps

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch 7 днів тому

      The back side of a purl stitch is a knit stitch. So if you purl every row you’ll have alternating rows of knits and purls, which is garter stitch. (This is the same if you knit every row). If you want one side to be all purl stitches then you need stockinette stitch, where one side is all knits and the backside is all purls: ua-cam.com/video/51ky5NOt3_Y/v-deo.htmlsi=0t20D_wvNAO-Ow4k hope that helps!

It makes a little hole. Is this right to you? I am confused... The pattern does not mention anything about the double strands. Please help!

      If you knit all your rows and/or purl all your rows you will get garter stitch. Both the knit and purl are two sides of the same coin. If you look at the back of a knit, you’ll see a purl and vice versa. It’s a bit confusing at first!

    I knew some knitting basics, but casting off was scary to me. What if all my work would unravel before my eyes? Well, you just helped me overcome that fear! Thank you so much for your wonderful and very beginner friendly tutorials! My future blanket and I are very grateful for the help <3

    Why can’t you tie before you cut?

    Thank you for a great tutorial! It was very clear and easy to understand. I was able to perform surgery on my sock and reattach the pieces using this method.

      “Perform surgery” haha I love that analogy. Very apt!

    I love this stitch and the result is beautiful. I would like to make this as a long rectangle to be used as a shawl, just draped over the shoulders. Do you have any suggestions about dimensions and the type of yarn? What about a silk blend which would be light and airy?

      A silk blend sounds gorgeous! If you’re planing to knit a long rectangle shawl (I believe this is called a “stole”) I would aim for a width of 20-30” and length of 65-75”. Knit a gauge swatch and block it so you have an idea of how many stitches = how many inches. Then you can do some math and figure out the number of cast on stitches and repeats you need for the your desired dimensions. Good luck!
